MUVATTUPUZHA MEDICAL CENTRE, MC ROAD, MUVATTUPUZHA
Erstwhile Santhinikethan Hospital, a Premier Medical Institution
in this area was established in 1967 by Dr N N Asokan
with 20 beds: moved into the new building on 5th April 1970. The
centre has all amenities of a multi-disciplinary hospital.
In 1967, there was no major hospital in the nereby town Kothamangalam
or Kolenchery. Santhinikethan Hospital turned out to be the only
place where people could get medical help. That was the time when
patients had to come with beds, linen, utensils and firewood for
preparation of food. The starting of Santhinikethan Hospital became
a blessing for such patients who could not go to Kottayam or Cochin
for treatment. It is thankfully remembered that Dr Sabhapathy, the
Eminent General Surgeon of Ernakulam used to come to do surgery
even at night and people had great appreciation for him. This Santhinikethan
Hospital was renamed Muvattupuzha Medical Centre in 1990, and is
run as a group managed by Dr. N N Asokan and his son Dr. Sajesh.
This centre has 50 beds mainly aimed at serving the critically
ill patients; Intensive Coronary Care Unit and
Intensive Respiratory Care Unit are the best in
the town with trained personnel and equipment with all clinical
laboratory facilities.
Facilities exist for all investigational procedures. OPD and Casualty
departments function in the basement area and the main entrance
is on the Velloorkunnam Temple road. The main entrance for serious
patients is through MC Road. Casualty services
(except for major accident cases) are available all 24 hours.
At present the bed strength limits the admission except to seriously
sick patients. Expansion of the services is expected to start in
this year in the adjacent compound, since the special clinics
for cardiology, diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary, geriatric medicine
etc. are waiting to be upgraded.
